What’s the Theory Test all about?

The test consists of 50 questions in a multiple choice format. All the questions will appear on a computer screen which is touch sensitive. The questions are designed to be very easy to read, only appearing one at a time. You will be able to skip forwards and backwards through the questions, and can take up to 57 minutes to finish the theory test.

The questions will cover a range of topics. I suggest you get yourself the official Driving Standards Agency books, so as to prepare yourself properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below is a list of some of the questions I get asked about the theory test. If you have any further questions, I will be happy to give you an answer (..if I can!). Send your questions to me via email.

Do I have to take the theory test?

Most people will have to take and pass the theory test before applying for the practical driving test. However, there are a few exceptions

  • If you hold a foreign licence, you may be able to simply exchange it to a UK licence. You would need to check with the Driver Vehicle Licencing Agency (tel:0870 240 0009).
  • You do not have to take a theory test if you are simply upgrading your existing full UK licence (e.g. B to B+E)

Can I do my driving test before my theory test?

No. You MUST pass your theory test before you can even apply for your practical driving test.

How many correct answers do I need to get?

The theory test consists of 50 multiple choice questions. You need at least 43 correct answers to pass.

How long is the theory test?

You will have 57 minutes to complete the theory test, longer if you have special needs. However, it is important that you state your needs when booking your theory test so that the necessary arrangements can be made. If you are uncertain as to your needs, please telephone the special needs unit on 0300 200 1122 (0845 600 6700 in Northern Ireland).

Do I get my result straight away?

In most test centres you will get your result and, if you pass, your theory test pass certificate within about half an hour of completing the theory test.

What happens if I fail?

If this happens, you may retake the theory test as many times as is necessary. However, you must leave a minimum of three working days between each attempt. Good preparation will save you a lot of time and money!

My English is not very good. Can I take the theory test in my own language?

At present, the theory test can be conducted in 20 other languages through the use of a headset giving a voice-over. The available languages are:- Albanian, Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, Dari, Farsi, Gujarati, Hindi, Kashmiri, Kurdish, Mirpuri, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Pushto, Spanish, Tamil, Turkish, Urdu and Welsh.

If your language is not offered, you may be able to take a translator. The translator must be approved by the DSA and at present can only be accommodated at the following theory test centres:- Aldershot, Birkenhead, Birmingham, Cardiff, Derby, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Ipswich, Leeds, Milton Keynes, Palmers Green and Preston.

How do I book the theory test?

Please see the section on necessary documentation and booking forms – Click Here.

What happens if I need to cancel my theory test?

You can cancel or re-arrange a theory test so long as you contact the booking office at least three clear working days before your appointment. Any later than this and you will probably lose your fee unless you have a doctors note or there are some exceptional circumstances.
