Applying for a Provisional Driving Licence
Form D1
 | | When applying for your first provisional driving licence, you will need form D1 from the Post Office.
You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a provisional driving licence, but entitlement to drive a car will only begin on your 17th birthday.
With the form, you will be given complete instructions on how to fill out the application. These instructions should be read very carefully so as to complete the form correctly, else the application will be returned to you

Form D1 can also be used to:-
- Renew a driving licence
- Obtain a duplicate driving licence
- Add or remove provisional motorcycle entitlement
- Add provisional entitlement to drive medium/large vehicles or minibuses/buses
- Exchange a foreign/NI driving licence
- Remove expired endorsements
| With the introduction of photocard driving licences, you will also need to complete and send form D750. This form will be included in the pack from the Post Office
A clear photograph with a white background will be needed, and this must be signed by a reputable person who has known you for at least two years and is not a relative.
Suitable persons might be:-
- a local business person or shopkeeper
- a librarian
- a professionally qualified person
- a police officer
- a bank or building society officer
- a civil servant
- a minister of religion
- a magistrate
- a local councillor or MP

Alternatively, you can send a current UK or EC/EEA passport with your application.

Applying for the Theory Test
There are now four ways to book a theory test:-
- Phone: Call 0300 200 1122 and have your driving licence number and debit/credit card details to hand.
- Fax: Fax the completed application form to 0300 200 1155.
- Post: Send the completed application form with your postal order or cheque to the Driving Standards Agency, PO Box 280, Newcastle upon Tyne. NE99 1FP. Postal orders an cheques must be made payable to Driving Standards Agency. Please write your Driving Licence Number on the back of the cheque/postal order.
- Internet: You may book online at
www.direct.gov.uk/drivingtest

Applying for the Practical Driving Test
Application form for a Practical Driving Test
| | You MUST have passed your theory test before applying for your Practical Driving Test. Your certificate number will be required on your application.
You are ready to apply for your driving test when your driving instructor feels you are ready! Too many candidates arrive unprepared for the driving test, only to be disappointed when they don't pass.
You can get one of these forms from your driving instructor or from any Driving Test Centre. The driving test can then be booked:-

Important Information
- If after 2 weeks you have not received your appointment, phone 0300 200 1122 immediately. If you miss your appointment you may lose your fee.
- If you need to re-arrange your driving test appointment, phone 0300 200 1122 on or before the cancellation date or you may lose your fee.
- If you are ill and cannot give the required notice to cancel your driving test appointment, phone 0300 200 1122 for further guidance.
- We may need to contact you if your appointment has to be changed for any reason. Phone 0300 200 1122 immediately if you change your name or address.
