I qualified as a driving instructor in 1996 and have seen many changes in the driving test in that time.

...The test itself has been lengthened, extra manoeuvres have been introduced and even additional theory and hazard perception tests invented… all at extra cost of course!

The building of the Driving Test Centre (DTC) at Bayton Road introduced even more obstacles to the prospective new driver in Coventry.

...The location gave sufficient reason to make use of faster roads such as the A444 and the larger roundabouts, which were previously considered too difficult for a novice driver to realistically cope with.

It has always been maintained by the DSA that instructors should: "Keep pupils off the official test routes as there is more to learning to drive than just learning the test routes. If a candidate is properly prepared, they should be able to drive anywhere."

I agree. However, when even experienced drivers have great difficulty dealing with roundabouts such as "The Ricoh", then a test candidate who has never been there before would have little or no chance of successfully coping with that situation.

Over the past two years I’ve been keeping a record of not only what candidates are failing for, but where they are failing. My statistics seem to suggest that there are too many serious faults committed at a just few particularly difficult junctions in the area.

Rowleys Green "Ricoh" Roundabout
The M6 Roundabout
The Griff House Roundabout
The Bedworth One-Way System
...and a few other troublesome spots.
